Project RED examines the color red as a cultural, material, and perceptual force. Developed during the art residency in the Rhodope Mountains, the project draws on the region’s visual and symbolic traditions, where red is deeply embedded in ritual life, landscape, and collective memory. Appearing in traditional costumes of rhodophean villagers, rites of passage, womanhood (myth Rohodphe, Orpheus and the snake) and natural formations (rusty mountains, rusty rivers), red functions as a marker of transition — from birth to marriage, from continuity to change.
The RED painting series follows the image of the river as both motif and metaphor. Each work represents a different phase within a continuous flow, where red traces moments of intensity, rupture, and transition. The use of a red primer establishes color as a structural foundation, guiding the visual narrative from its base.
In How to Turn Red, color is approached as a process rather than a result, emphasizing transformation and material change. Reliqs from the Red Forest presents fragmentary forms that resemble traces or remains, pointing toward memory, landscape, and constructed mythologies, researching the fluid concept of miracle itself.
References to Goethe’s and Rudolf Steiner’s color theories inform the project’s approach to red as a force that advances toward the viewer, carrying emotional weight and visual intensity. Alchemical notions of rubedo further frame red as a state of culmination and integration — not symbolically resolved, but materially present.
RED positions color as a threshold phenomenon: a visual agent that mediates between perception and meaning, structure and flux, cultural memory and contemporary interpretation.
